Skid Steer vs Posi Track:
Which Compact Loader Should You Hire?

Two compact loaders that look similar and behave very differently on site. Here’s how the Toyota Huski 5SDK5 skid steer and the Wacker Neuson ST11 posi track stack up, and which one suits your ground.

If you’ve got a job with a lot of material to move, ground to level, or site clean-up to get through, a compact loader can save you days of manual labour. But once you start looking at hiring one, you’ll run into two options that look similar at first glance and behave very differently on site. Choosing between them usually comes down to one thing: the ground you’re working on.

1

What Is a Compact Loader?

🏗️

A compact loader is a small, powerful machine designed to do the heavy lifting on residential, landscaping and light commercial jobs. Think of it as a step up from a mini loader — more power, more lifting capacity, and the ability to work through bigger volumes of material — while still being compact enough to manoeuvre on sites where a full-size loader would be overkill.

Both the skid steer and the posi track are built around the same idea: a compact, manoeuvrable machine with a loader arm at the front that takes a range of attachments. The difference is in what’s underneath.

The Skid Steer: Toyota Huski 5SDK5

🛞
Best on firm, hard ground

The Toyota Huski 5SDK5 is a wheeled skid steer and a proven all-rounder for a huge range of jobs. Because it runs on wheels rather than tracks, it’s quick and nimble on firm, hard surfaces like driveways, compacted base, concrete pads, gravel yards and general construction sites.

  • Moving and loading bulk material such as soil, sand, gravel and mulch
  • Site clean-ups and demolition clear-outs
  • Levelling and preparing hard or compacted ground
  • Loading trucks and trailers

Where you’ll want to be more careful is soft or delicate ground — wheels can leave ruts and mark up turf, so for finished lawns or muddy sites, look at the posi track instead.

Working on a driveway, building site or hardstand? The Toyota Huski 5SDK5 skid steer is fast, agile and built for firm ground.

The Posi Track: Wacker Neuson ST11

🌱
Best on soft, wet or delicate ground

The Wacker Neuson ST11 is a posi track loader, which means it runs on rubber tracks instead of wheels. Because the weight is spread across a larger surface area, it sits lighter on the ground and is far kinder to soft or sensitive surfaces, with significantly better traction on wet, muddy, sandy or uneven ground where a wheeled machine can start to struggle.

  • Lawns, turf and landscaped areas where you want to minimise damage
  • Wet or muddy sites after rain
  • Sandy or loose ground
  • Sloped or uneven terrain

If protecting the ground matters just as much as moving the material, the posi track is usually the smarter pick.

Skid Steer or Posi Track?

⚖️
Think about the surface first

The simplest way to decide is to think about the surface you’ll be working on. Hard, firm or compacted ground suits the skid steer. Soft, wet, sandy or finished ground suits the posi track.

If your job involves a mix of both, tell us what you’re working on. There’s often a clear winner once you describe the site, and we’d rather point you to the right machine than have you fight the wrong one for the day.

Attachments

🛠️
One machine, plenty of jobs

Like most compact loaders, both machines can be fitted with a range of attachments, which is where a lot of the value comes from. Instead of hiring separate equipment for each stage of a project, you can often cover several tasks with one loader and a couple of attachment changes.

Attachment availability can vary, so if you have a specific task in mind, let us know when you enquire and we’ll confirm what’s available to go with the machine. That way the right setup is ready on the day, rather than finding out on site that you’re missing the one attachment you needed.

Not sure which loader suits your site? Describe the ground and the job and we’ll point you to the right machine.

Trailer Hire or Delivery

🚛
Flexible pickup options

Both the Toyota Huski 5SDK5 and the Wacker Neuson ST11 are available to hire on a trailer, so if you’ve got a suitable vehicle to tow with, you can pick the machine up and have it on site the same day.

If towing isn’t convenient, or you’d rather not deal with loading and unloading a machine yourself, we also offer delivery across Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Logan and Ipswich. Get in touch and we’ll sort out the details based on your location.

Booking a Compact Loader

📞

If your project involves landscaping and site prep, driveway or paving base preparation, site clean-ups, or shifting large volumes of soil, sand, gravel or mulch, a compact loader will save you serious time and effort. Doing any of these by hand means wheelbarrows, shovels and a lot of sore backs — a loader turns days of manual work into hours.

Tell us what the job involves and what the ground is like when you book, and we’ll make sure you’re on the right machine. We service the Gold Coast, Brisbane, Logan and Ipswich area, with delivery available from our Stapylton depot, or trailer pickup if that suits you better.

Before You Book — 3 Things to Check

A quick checklist to save you time and hassle on delivery day.

01Ground conditions — firm and hard, or soft, wet and delicate? This decides skid steer vs posi track
02Attachments — confirm any add-ons you need are booked alongside the machine
03Pickup or delivery — check you have a suitable tow vehicle for trailer pickup, or arrange delivery instead
