Both the skid steer and the posi track are built around the same idea: a compact, manoeuvrable machine with a loader arm at the front that takes a range of attachments. The difference is in what’s underneath.

Best on firm, hard ground

The Toyota Huski 5SDK5 is a wheeled skid steer and a proven all-rounder for a huge range of jobs. Because it runs on wheels rather than tracks, it’s quick and nimble on firm, hard surfaces like driveways, compacted base, concrete pads, gravel yards and general construction sites.

• Levelling and preparing hard or compacted ground

Where you’ll want to be more careful is soft or delicate ground — wheels can leave ruts and mark up turf, so for finished lawns or muddy sites, look at the posi track instead.

Best on soft, wet or delicate ground

The Wacker Neuson ST11 is a posi track loader, which means it runs on rubber tracks instead of wheels. Because the weight is spread across a larger surface area, it sits lighter on the ground and is far kinder to soft or sensitive surfaces, with significantly better traction on wet, muddy, sandy or uneven ground where a wheeled machine can start to struggle.

If protecting the ground matters just as much as moving the material, the posi track is usually the smarter pick.

Think about the surface first

The simplest way to decide is to think about the surface you’ll be working on. Hard, firm or compacted ground suits the skid steer. Soft, wet, sandy or finished ground suits the posi track.

If your job involves a mix of both, tell us what you’re working on. There’s often a clear winner once you describe the site, and we’d rather point you to the right machine than have you fight the wrong one for the day.

Like most compact loaders, both machines can be fitted with a range of attachments, which is where a lot of the value comes from. Instead of hiring separate equipment for each stage of a project, you can often cover several tasks with one loader and a couple of attachment changes.

Flexible pickup options

Both the Toyota Huski 5SDK5 and the Wacker Neuson ST11 are available to hire on a trailer, so if you’ve got a suitable vehicle to tow with, you can pick the machine up and have it on site the same day.
